In this piece, I painted two matryoshka silhouettes — not full figures, but their shadows, cut from Khokhloma patterns. Black and yellow create more than visual contrast; they represent light and darkness, past and present, form and absence.

I wanted to show that tradition doesn’t have to be literal — it can be felt, like a rhythm that lives inside us. The ornament doesn’t decorate the matryoshka — it is the matryoshka. It breathes through the silhouette.

The two figures feel like echoes of the same culture. They might be reflections of each other, a beginning and an end — but for me, they are a dialogue. Between what once was, and what still lives within me now.
