All types of fireflies have an amazing ability to emit soft phosphorescent light in the dark. Many species of fireflies are active at night. Greenish-white lights sparkle in the dark night air. The first mention of fireflies is found in literature as early as the end of the 8th century, and during the Edo period they are mentioned in haiku, in poems and essays. Even then there was a belief that the lights of fireflies are the souls of the dead.
